  • 2 medium apples cored and thinly sliced.
  • cup water
  • 1 ½ teaspoon lemon juice.
  • 2 Puff pastry sheets thawed
  • 1 Tablespoon unsalted butter melted

For the cinnamon sugar:

  • cup light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon.

For garnishing:

  • Powdered sugar, or any sauce, frosting or icing you like

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375F and butter, or spray, your muffin tin.
  • In a Microwave safe bowl, place water, lemon juice and mix well, then add apple slices and microwave on high for 3-4 minutes until soften.
  • In a separate bowl combine brown sugar and cinnamon.
  • Lightly roll the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface then cut into 4 equal parts.
  • Brush each part with some melted butter, sprinkle about a 1 ½ to 2 tablespoons of the brown sugar mixture on.
  • Layer the apple slices along the long edge of the dough, make sure that they are overlapping.
  • Fold bottom part of the puff pastry sheet over the apples and roll.
  • Bake until nicely browned, take about 30-40 minutes.

Notes

  • If you do not have a microwave you can bake the apple slices in the oven. Mix apple slices with lemon juice and spread on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake on 350F for 10-12 minutes or until tender and pliable. Wait for them to cool down before proceeding with the recipe.
  • It is always a good idea to butter your muffing tin before placing the roses in so they will not stick especially when the sugar caramelizes.
  • Another idea is to line the muffin tin with cupcake liners.
  • I've found that 4 parts makes big roses which is something me and my husband appreciated but was hard for the little ones to bite into. So you might want to cut it into 6 parts if you want to make them smaller.
  • If you are left with some remaining sugar mixture you can sprinkle them on top of the roses for a more crunch. If you do so make sure to use cupcake liners though.
  • Some people do not like the fact that roses get out of the oven darker and the apples lose their color, which is obviously natural. This did not bother me, but if this is your case, you might want to loosely cover the muffin tin with foil to help reduce that.
  • Storage:
    • It is best to consume apple roses on the day they were made but if you have leftover roses place them on an air tight container and refrigerate for 203 days.
  • Make ahead:
    • You can assemble apple roses, place in the muffin tin, cover and refrigerate for up to 24 hours.
