Ground Beef Gyros

Homemade gyros with flavorful beef is an easier version of the traditional Greek gyros made with ground beef and delicious spices. Works great for a weeknight dinner or gathering.

Equipment

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs ground beef
  • 1 onion
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • teaspoon salt or to taste
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 3 Tablespoons plain yogurt
  • 1 Tablespoon olive oil

To Serve

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • In your food processor, process onion, garlic and the rest of the spices until finely chopped.
  • Add ground beef and process until the mixture is soft and like a paste.
  • Shape into a loaf, place on a baking sheet and bake for 40 minutes or until done.
  • Take it out of the oven, cover loosely with aluminum foil and wait for it to cook down for about 10 minutes.

To assemble gyros:

  • In a lightly oiled hot skillet, brown the gyro slices on high heat for about 30 seconds on each side.
  • Place meat on pita bread topped with some tzatziki sauce, sliced onions, tomatoes and lettuce or Greek salad.

Notes

  • If you would like to use fresh herbs use 1 tablespoon fresh instead of 1 teaspoon of dried.
Storage
  • Store leftover ground beef gyros in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3 days.
