Hashweh (Ground Beef and Rice)

Fluffy rice with flavorful ground beef mixture topped with crunchy nutty mixture this is an affordable festive dish that can be done in less than 30 minutes. Use as a side dish or a main dish with some roasted vegetables on the side.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium onion diced
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt or to taste
  • 1 teaspoon 7-spice blend
  • 1 ½ cups jasmine rice
  • 2 ½ cups boiling water/broth or stock

To garnish:

  • Toasted pine nuts and slivered almonds
  • Fresh parsley chopped

Instructions

  • In a large skillet over medium high heat, saute onion in olive oil until translucent for about 3 minutes.
  • Add ground beef break it apart with a wooden spoon and cook until no longer pink.
  • Drain excess fat if desired then return skillet to stove.
  • Add spices and mix well.
  • Add rice to the pan then pour in cooking liquid of choice. Mix well to combine.
  • Bring to a boil uncovered, then reduce heat to low, cover and continue to cook until rice is done.
  • Remove from heat and let it stand for 5 minutes then fluff and serve garnished with parsley and toasted nuts.

Notes

  • Taste the rice after it has cooked, you might need a sprinkle of salt or more spices. Just add to the top, mix lightly, cover and leave for another couple of minutes then serve.
  • Variations:
    • You can use your favorite ground meat like ground lamb or turkey. If using ground turkey add more spices.
    • Use any rice you have, you will need to adjust the water and cooking time accordingly.
    • Add a cup of frozen peas or any frozen vegetables you like with the rice for a more hearty and complete meal.
  • Storage: Place leftover in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3 days.
