Ingredients

  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 block cream cheese 8oz room temperature
  • 1 ½ teaspoon dry yeast
  • 2 Tablespoons granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup warm water more or less depends on the dough
  • Oil for frying

To garnish:

  • Confectioner’s sugar simple syrup, chocolate syrup.

Instructions

  • In a big bowl or your mixer’s bowl, combine dry ingredients well.
  • Add cheese and mix.
  • Gradually add water while kneading until you get a nice consistent dough that does not stick.
  • Place dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover and let it rise for an hour.
  • Roll the dough on a clean surface to about 3-4 mm thickness.
  • Cut with cookie cutter to shape of choice.
  • Heat 1 inch of oil in a pan and fry the fritters until golden brown, they will puff up as they fry and will be hollow.
  • Drizzle hot fritters with cooled simple syrup, honey or dust with powdered sugar.
  • Garnish with crushed nuts and serve with fresh fruits is desired.

Notes

  • Make sure your cream cheese is at room temperature before working with it. This makes the kneading easier.
  • You can add some spices to the dough to change the flavor a bit, ground cinnamon, cardamom or cloves work well for this recipe.
  • It is best to consume cheese fritters fresh.
  • Leftovers should be kept at room temperature in an airtight container. Last up to 2 days
  • For the simple syrup you will need 2 cups granulated sugar 1 cup water Juice of ½ lime 1 teaspoon of any of rose water, orange blossom water or vanilla extract.
