❤️ Why You'll Love It

  • You don't have to worry about buying special mixes at the grocery store when you can make this blend at home.
  • It adds the perfect flavor to your dishes without overpowering it.
  • It's easy to customize the flavors according to your personal preference by adding or subtracting spices in the mix.

This homemade spice mix is one of my go-to seasonings for so many dishes. I love adding it to Lebanese Kafta, roasted Palestinian chicken, Maqluba and more. It's so versatile and so much cheaper than the store-bought version.

📝 Ingredients

Note: This is an overview of the ingredients. You'll find the full measurements and instructions in the recipe card (printable) at the bottom of the page.

This blend of spices is very common in the Arabic kitchen and a main ingredient in the Lebanese cuisine. Different spices are used across the region.

  • allspice
  • ground coriander
  • black pepper
  • cinnamon
  • cloves
  • cardamom
  • ginger

🥄 Instructions

Note: This is an overview of the instructions. The detailed instructions are in the recipe card below.

  1. In a bowl mix all the spices together until well blended.
  2. Store in an airtight spice jar for up to 6 months.

👍 Amira's Tips

  • The ingredients in 7 Spice vary widely based on region. This is my favorite mixture, but you can easily customize it to your taste.
  • You can use whole spices and then toast and grind them yourself to get more flavor in your spice mix.
  • If you are using spices that you've had in your cabinet for a while check them for freshness by giving them a smell test. If they have a strong scent they are ready to use.

🧺 Storage

Store your homemade spice mix in an airtight container in a cool dark place for up to 6 months. I like to use a glass spice container or a small mason jar to store my spices.

⌛ Make Ahead

The good news is that this spice mix stores well. So, mix up a big batch and you will always have the seasonings that you need to make delicious dishes on hand.

🍽️ Serve With

There are so many great recipes that you can use this seasoning blend with however my favorites are Musakhan which is a spiced chicken, and Kafta which is a savory Beef Kabobs recipe. You can't go wrong with either one of these recipes.

👩‍🍳 Variations

  • Add a touch of flavor and a beautiful color to mix by adding a ½ teaspoon of paprika.
  • For a hint of spice cayenne pepper will work great in this spice mix.
  • In Turkey fennel or dried mint is commonly found in this mix, so you can add those also if you prefer.
  • Turmeric and cumin are also great additions to this mix. The best thing about this recipe is it's so easy to customize to suit your taste buds.

💬 FAQs

Is seven spice the same as allspice?

No, seven spice and allspice are two different spices. Seven spice is a blend of seven spices, while allspice is a single spice.

Is 7 spice hot?

No, this 7 Spice Mix is not hot. The spices used in the mix are mostly warm and fragrant spices like allspice, coriander, and cinnamon. However, you can always add a little bit of cayenne or red pepper flakes to give it a bit more heat if desired.

Ingredients

  • 1 Tablespoon allspice
  • 1 Tablespoon coriander
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoons cloves
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cardamom
  • ¼ teaspoon ground ginger

Instructions

  • In a bowl mix all the spices together until well blended.
  • Store in an airtight spice jar for up to 6 months.

Notes

  • Many people like to buy their spices whole then toast and grind them. I actually love the idea but for the sake of convenience you can use the spices in their ground form.
  • 7 spice mix differs from country to country. In the Middle East and even between areas in the same country. You will find some people add nutmeg, turmeric, cumin and other spices too. This is simply how I like mine.
