Air fryer French fries

  • Air fryers use significantly less oil, making your fries a healthier alternative to traditional deep fryer versions.
  • Your fries will be ready in almost half the cooking time, if not even less, than traditional oven method.
  • French fries are one of the most beloved foods around the world. A crowd-pleaser favorite fast food fries can be done healthier for your family to enjoy.

This was one of the first air fryer recipes I've tried and I've tested in both regular and in toaster-oven-style air fryers. Works like a charm in both.

Ingredients you'll need

Note: This is an overview of the ingredients. You'll find the full measurements and instructions in the recipe card (printable) at the bottom of the page.

📋 Ingredient Notes / Variations

  • Frozen French fries: In this post, I've used crinkle cut fries. You can use different types of fries as well. You'll just need to adjust the cooking time depending on the thickness of the fries.
  • Seasoning: for simplicity, I used salt and black pepper. You can use your favorite seasonings like Italian seasoning, Cajun, Za'atar, Dukkah or fries seasoning.
  • Optional: cooking spray.

  • 6-Qt or larger air fryer. If you have a small one this will work too, you'll just need to work in batches.

Adaptable recipe – variations!

  • Toss air fryer french fries with some cayenne peppers, onion powder, chili powder and a dash of cumin for another flavor.
  • Sprinkle some taco seasoning on top and serve over some taco meat.
  • Make loaded french fries by melting some cheese on top and a sprinkle of bacon bits.
  • Sprinkle the cooked fries with grated parmesan cheese and garlic powder.

Step by step: instructions

Note: This is an overview of the instructions. The detailed instructions are in the recipe card below.

A collage of two images for the air fryer recipe.
  1. Preheat your air fryer to 400°F and spread frozen fries in an air fryer basket in a single layer.
  2. Cook them in the air fryer for about 8-15 minutes, giving them a good shake in the middle. Serve hot french fries with your favorite dipping sauces like ketchup, bbq sauce, honey mustard or ranch dressing.

My notes

  • While this recipe works as is, spraying the frozen fries with a little oil makes them extra crispy in less time.
  • Do not overcrowd the basket; cook in batches if needed.
  • Season after cooking, I've found that this is the best way to make seasoning stick especially if you did not use an oil spray.
  • Cook time varies according to your air fryer and the type of cries you are using.

Your questions answered: FAQs

My fries aren't crispy enough. What am I doing wrong?

You might have overcrowded the basket, added too much oil or you forgot to shake halfway through cooking. No problem, cook an additional two minutes at a time until they reach your desired texture.

Can I use any brand of frozen French fries for this recipe, or are specific types recommended?

You can use any brand of frozen French fries for this recipe. However, thicker-cut fries may require slightly longer cooking times, so you might need to adjust accordingly.

Do I need to thaw the frozen French fries before cooking them in the air fryer?

No, there's no need to thaw the frozen French fries before cooking them in the air fryer. Cooking them from frozen ensures they stay crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.

Can I cook a large batch of frozen French fries in the air fryer at once, or do I need to cook them in batches?

It's best to cook the frozen French fries in a single layer in the air fryer basket to ensure they cook evenly and become crispy. If your air fryer basket is small, you may need to cook them in batches to avoid overcrowding. Alternatively, you can use a larger air fryer with a bigger basket if you need to cook a large batch at once

Storage and reheating

Refrigerate - Store leftover fries in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.

Reheat- Reheat leftover fries in the air fryer at 350°F for a few minutes until crispy.

Perfect pairings: what to serve with

I can eat French fries with anything, as simple as a feta cheese sandwich or as hearty and meaty as Shish Tawook. And who wouldn't enjoy a pile of these crispy fries with a Big Juicy Burger or a Msuhroom Swiss Burger?
