Ingredients for the beef steak recipe.

📋 Ingredient Notes / Variations

  • Sesame oil: Don't skip the sesame oil, this nutty and sweet oil smells delicious and adds a wonderful flavor to the entire dish.
  • Beef: Use your favorite cut of beef but I find stew meat is a good choice as well as London broil, round steak or flat iron steak works well too.
  • Garlic: A delicious pungent ingredient that adds tremendous flavor when cooked.
  • Honey: Adds a sticky glaze and helps tenderize the beef.
  • Ketchup: Adds salty and slight sweetness from the tomatoes.
  • Soy sauce: A yummy flavor as well as adding salt, I like to use the low-sodium version so it's not overpowering with saltiness, however you can use regular soy sauce if you prefer.
  • Oregano: Just a touch for additional seasoning.
  • Cornstarch: Mixed with water at the end to create a cornstarch slurry for thickening the sauce.

👍 Let's make the perfect recipe: Amira's tips

  • Check thickness 15 minutes before it ends cooking. If it is thinner than what you want, dissolve cornstarch in a tablespoon of tap water and pour it over the meat then stir. Let if finish cooking the remaining time.
  • Serve garnished with sesame seeds and chopped green onions.
  • The sauce can be served on the side like a dipping sauce.
  • Swap out the green onions for chopped parsley if you prefer.

💬 Your questions answered: FAQs

What does honey do to the steak?

Honey adds a touch of sweetness, stickiness as well as helping to tenderize the meat as it cooks slowly in your crockpot.

Do I have to brown the beef before adding to the slow cooker?

I mean, you don't have to, but it is highly recommended to do so. Searing or browning adds flavor, a delicious caramelized glaze as well as well as helping the meat to be tender and juicy. This 5 minute step will make the best tender steak bites and the end result will be worth it!
