Note: This is an overview of the ingredients. You'll find the full measurements and instructions in the recipe card (printable) at the bottom of the page.
📋 Ingredient Notes
- Tortellini: I used refrigerated fresh tortellini from your supermarket. Any flavor you enjoy will do.
- Butter: A touch of butter adds a delicious taste to our creamy sauce.
- Oil: A light-tasting oil, such as avocado oil, works well. You can use light olive oil.
- Fresh garlic: Must have for homemade Alfredo sauce.
- Heavy cream: The base of the homemade creamy Alfredo sauce.
- Italian seasoning: Magnifies the flavor of the recipe.
- Black pepper: Enhances the flavor of the dish.
- Salt: A must for elevating the taste of the Alfredo sauce.
- Parmesan cheese: Get a block and grate it at home for the creamiest sauce.
- Mozzarella cheese: Freshly shredded mozzarella is sprinkled on top before baking. Do not use pre-shredded cheese.

👍 Let's make the perfect recipe: Amira's tips
- Use any flavor of tortellini you like.
- Swap out the mozzarella for another favorite shredded cheese or a combination for more flavor. Try using a mixture of parmesan and Romano cheeses
- The key to making the Alfredo sauce is to use freshly grated parmesan cheese. This will ensure the cheese melts easily and creamy.
🧺 How to store leftovers
Refrigerate - Place leftover pasta in an airtight container and refrigerate for 3-4 days.
Freeze- Because this recipe is made with homemade Alfredo sauce with dairy, I do not recommend freezing it as it will separate while thawing.
Reheat - The best way to reheat this dish is by microwaving it. You can also heat it on the stovetop or in the oven if you prefer.
⌛ Make ahead and shortcuts
- This dish is a wonderful dish to make ahead and store in your fridge until ready to heat and enjoy.
- Making your own Alfredo sauce is easy but you can use your favorite store bought Alfredo sauce if you prefer. Just skip making the sauce in steps 3 to 7.
💬 FAQs
Once the pot of water boils, carefully add in the refrigerated tortellini and follow the package instructions. Usually it's about 5 minutes, for this recipe cook it one minute less than the package states.
When making Alfredo tortellini bake, it is recommended that the tortellini be boiled before adding to the sauce. Without par boiling the tortellini will take longer to cook and may become mushy.
Although nothing beats homemade, if you are in a time crunch, you can use a jar of Alfredo sauce in place of the heavy cream and parmesan cheese.
