🥄 Instructions

Note: This is an overview of the instructions. The detailed instructions are in the recipe card below.

A collage of four images showing how to make Hula pie.
  1. Make the chocolate cookie base: Crush the chocolate cookies in your food processor and mix with melted butter. Press into a 9 inch pie dish and freeze.
  2. Mix softened ice cream in a large bowl with chopped macadamia nuts and coconut extract.
  3. Line a mixing bowl with plastic wrap, scoop ice cream mixture, cover, and freeze. When hard enough, invert on top of the pie crust to get the dome shape.
  4. Microwave chocolate fudge for 10 seconds. Spoon about 1 cup of fudge over the ice cream dome and spread evenly. Freeze for another 30 minutes.

💡 Tips

Time saving tip: Use store bought Oreo pie crust and if available you can use store bought macadamia ice cream as well.

  • Macadamia ice-cream has a hint of coconut that's why we need the coconut flavor but feel free to skip if you do not like it.
  • Use store-bought fudge or this easy hot fudge sauce.
  • Do not microwave the fudge, as it says on the jar if it is store-bought. This will warm it up too much, and when poured over the ice cream, it will make a mess, and the ice cream will melt.
  • It helps to dip a clean knife into hot water and wipe it dry before slicing. This will give you beautiful, smooth, and clean cuts. Rewarm the knife between cuts.
  • If you do not have a food processor, you can put the Oreo cookies in a sealed bag and break them with a rolling pin until finely crushed.
  • You can use a stand mixer or a hand mixer to mix the ice cream.

🧺 Storage

  • Leftover Hula pie can be wrapped and kept in your freezer for up to 1 to 2 weeks. When ready to serve, let thaw for about 15 minutes for easier slicing.
  • It is not recommended to store Hula pie in the refrigerator as the ice cream will melt.

⌛ Make Ahead

  • Hula pie is definitely an ice cream pie to be made ahead of time. You can mix up the ice cream, nuts and coconut and store it in the freezer until you are ready to assemble the pie.

🍽️ Serve With

Hula pie can be served with a creamy fudge sauce, whipped cream and extra macadamia nuts on top.
