One thing about Mediterranean cooking is that you go through a lot of tahini paste.  But, with this simple list of swaps you don't have to head out to your local grocery stores the next time you make a recipe and realize that you are out of tahini.

Did you know that you can make your homemade tahini right in the comfort of your kitchen? You just need a few simple ingredients and a little bit of time to make this nutty sauce.

What is Tahini?

Tahini is a paste made from toasted and ground sesame seeds. It has a creamy texture and a slightly nutty flavor, making it a versatile ingredient in both sweet and savory dishes.

It is often a key ingredient in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisine, tahini is a key component in recipes such as hummus, baba ganoush, and salad dressings.

What Does Tahini Taste Like?

Tahini has a rich, nutty flavor with a hint of bitterness. The flavor can vary slightly depending on the type of sesame seeds used and how they are processed.

The more toasted the seeds then the nuttier and deeper the flavor will be. Even though it has a unique flavor there are still alternative ingredients that you can use to match the creamy texture and distinctive flavor in your dishes.

Tahini substitute options for Mediterranean cooking

When it comes to Mediterranean cooking, tahini is an essential ingredient that adds a rich and nutty flavor to dishes. However, if you find yourself running low on this sesame seed paste or simply don't have any in your pantry, don't worry!

There are plenty of substitutes that will work just as well in your recipes.

Nut and Seed Butters

If you ask me, I've found that seed butters are the best tahini substitute, however, if you don't have them on hand, there are some other delicious swaps that you can use to make your middle eastern dishes.

  • Peanut butter: This creamy and slightly sweet spread makes a great substitute for tahini. It has a similar texture and consistency, making it perfect for dips and sauces. Just keep in mind that peanut butter has a stronger flavor, so you may need to adjust the amount used in your recipe.
  • Almond butter: Another nut butter option, almond butter has a slightly different flavor than tahini but still adds a rich and creamy texture to dishes. It works particularly well in salad dressings and marinades.
  • Cashew Butter:  For a milder and slightly sweeter substitute, try using cashew butter in place of tahini. It has a smoother texture than other nut butters and works well in hummus or as a topping for roasted vegetables.
  • Pumpkin Seed Butter:  Another nut-free option, pumpkin seed butter has a rich, earthy flavor and is packed with nutrients. It can be used in savory dishes like sauces or as a spread on toast.
  • Sunflower butter: For those with nut allergies, sunflower seed butter is a great alternative to tahini. It has a similar texture and flavor and can be used in equal amounts in recipes.

Pantry Staples

If you have nut or seed allergies in your family, don't worry there are still some great options that you can use to get the same flavor in your meals.

Sesame oil: This will give your dish that distinct nutty flavor without needing actual tahini paste.
Greek yogurt: In some recipes, like creamy sauces or dips, you can use plain Greek yogurt as a substitute for tahini. While it won't add the same nutty flavor, it will still provide that rich and creamy consistency.
Creamy hummus: Another option for those with nut allergies, using store-bought or homemade hummus can work well as a tahini substitute. Just be aware that hummus already has a lot of added flavors, so it may change the taste of your dish slightly. Here is How to Make Hummus easily at home.
Miso paste: This fermented soybean paste is a popular ingredient in Asian cuisine and can also work as a tahini substitute. It adds a similar depth of flavor and creamy texture to dishes like dips and dressings.
Coconut cream: For a dairy-free alternative to tahini, try using coconut cream. It adds a creamy texture and subtle sweetness to dishes, making it a great substitute for dressings or marinades.
Chickpeas: If you're out of tahini but still want that classic hummus taste, you can blend canned chickpeas with some olive oil and spices to create a similar dish. While it won't have the same flavor, it will work just fine.

Tips For Substituting Tahini In Recipes

When substituting tahini in recipes, it's important to consider the flavor and texture of the alternative ingredient to ensure it fits the dish you're preparing. Here are some tips to help you make the best choice:

  • Tahini has a distinct nutty and slightly bitter flavor. When choosing a substitute, opt for ingredients that either replicate this flavor or complement the other ingredients in your dish.
  • The creamy texture of tahini is a crucial component in many recipes. Make sure your substitute has a similar consistency to achieve the desired the same texture in your dish.
  • Some substitutes may have a stronger or milder flavor compared to tahini. You may need to adjust the quantities used in your recipe to achieve the perfect balance. I always recommend that you start with smaller amounts, and adjust to suit your taste.

By following these tips, you can confidently replace tahini in your recipes without compromising on flavor or texture.

Is Black Sesame Paste the Same Thing As Tahini?

In terms of flavor and texture, black sesame paste is quite similar to tahini. However, the two are made from different types of sesame seeds - tahini is typically made from white sesame while black sesame paste obviously contains black sesame seeds.

So while they may not technically be the same thing, black sesame paste can definitely work as a substitute for tahini in many recipes.
