💡 Tips

  • For apples you can use Granny Smith apples, Gala, Fuji, Golden delicious, Pink lady, Honey Crisp or a combination. Look for apples that hold their texture when cooked.
  • I like using a mix of apples so it will not be too tart or too sweet.
  • You can peel the apples if you would like to.
  • Butter gives this recipe a tasty flavor more like apple pie. But you can also use olive oil, vegan butter or coconut for a vegan dish.
  • For a thicker sauce add a tablespoon of cornstarch or flour.

🧺 Storage

Refrigerate - Leftovers can be kept refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

Reheat - place leftover in an oven safe dish and reheat in a 300F oven until thoroughly heated.

This is one of the best apple desserts to enjoy during apple season.

👩‍🍳 Variations

  • If you do not have honey you can try coconut sugar or light brown sugar although I like using dark brown sugar. But this will make your dish less healthy.
  • In my opinion the best apples to use are a combination of honey crisp apples, red delicious with some tart apples like granny smith. But you can experiment with whatever apples you like.
  • Mix with some peanut butter if you do not have nuts available, so delicious.

🍽️ Serve With

  • This is a great side dish during the holidays and goes perfect with your roasted turkey.
  • Serve baked apple slices as is or with a scoop of Condensed Milk Ice Cream, plain Greek yogurt, pudding, or mix with your morning oatmeal.

💬 Recipe FAQs

What can I use in place of honey?

If you prefer not to use honey as a sweetener or don't have it on hand, you can also use maple syrup or even brown sugar. However, please keep in mind that switching out ingredients may not produce the same taste and texture. Also, maple syrup although a fabulous ingredient, is a little thinner than honey. You may want to add a tablespoon of cornstarch or flour to help thicken the sauce.

Are there any benefits to keeping the peel on the apples?

Although apples are healthy and delicious no matter how you're eating them, by taking off the peel, you are losing beneficial fiber, potassium and vitamin A. Also, what a time saver it is to make this dish with the peel on. Just wash, core and slice!

Happy fall baking Amira! This recipe is much easier and healthier than apple pie but equally delicious! It's a good way to use the apples from our trees that we are now busy picking. I've added some apple pie spices (cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, ginger, allspice and a sprinkle of cloves) because we love spices in this house!
