Chantilly Cream is an easy dessert topping as it is light, fluffy and delightfully good. It is made with just 3 simple ingredients and only takes minutes to make.

A basic chantilly cream is the perfect way to top fresh berries.

Chantilly cream, also known as Crème Chantilly is easily made with three ingredients. Starts with cold heavy cream, sugar and vanilla extract, it is then whipped until soft peaks form. This sweetened whipped cream can then be used in a variety of ways from topping cakes, pies, fresh fruit, fill for pastries, pancakes, a dollop in your hot chocolate or coffee for a luxurious treat!

In the Middle East, we call whipping cream "Cream Chantilly". When I was growing up all the cakes were decorated with cream Chantilly as we did not know about buttercream. This is the recipe that I am sharing with you today.

💡 Expert Tips

  • Make sure that your whipping cream is at least 35% fat content.
  • Some say that using granulated sugar is better. When I tried this I noticed a bit of a grainy texture in my Chantilly cream, but it is definitely not that bad especially if you are working with just the amount of sugar in the recipe.
  • You'll need to use cold cream so do not leave it out on the counter then use. Also if your kitchen is super hot, it is advised that you place your mixing bowl and whisk attachment in the freezer for 10 to 15 minutes before you start making the Chantilly cream.
  • Do not whip for too long as you will end up with butter.

🧁 Stabilized Whipped Cream

Let me start by saying this: Chantilly cream is the ONLY frosting we had on cakes when I was growing up in the Middle East. Of course, wedding cakes were a different story, but this is pretty much all we had.

So, coming to the States, it was very shocking that I could barely find cakes with chantilly cream. There are various ways to stabilize whipped cream. After experimenting, here is what I've found.

  • Use more powdered sugar. As powdered sugar contains starch, it will eventually thicken and stabilize the cream. This is not my favorite, as things can get way too sweet.
  • Vanilla pudding mix. Not bad and TBH I used it for many years until I reached my favorite way.
  • Mascarpone cheese. Was delicious and fluffy but was not economical at all, especially if you do not use it regularly.
  • Whipping cream powder. Any brand will do, even the store brand. The most common brand here is Dream Whip and in the Middle East you are more likely to find it under Dr. Oetker brand. I got the best results with this one, and I was actually very satisfied. I usually add 1 Tablespoon per cup of heavy cream but your are welcome to add more if you feel the need to.

🍽️ Serve With

  • Delicious on top of french toast, it is amazing with this Brioche French Toast.
  • Creme chantilly is the perfect topping for hot cocoa, try it with this creamy Italian Hot Chocolate.

🧺 To Store

  • Homemade Chantilly cream keeps well in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 24 hours.
  • If yours has been in the fridge for more than that, check for mold, loss of volume, smell, or if it is separated. IF you notice any of that, then discard it.
  • For longer storage, scoop or pipe the Chantilly cream on a parchment paper lined baking sheet and flash freeze until solid. Once frozen place them in a freezer safe container. Lasts for a couple of months but might lose a bit of consistency.

💬 FAQs

What is the difference between Chantilly cream and whipped cream?

I consider them the same and most would agree as they both start with heavy cream and is then whipped to soft peaks. Chantilly cream is then slightly sweetened.

Do I have to use an electric mixer to make Chantilly Cream?

No! You can use a balloon whisk if you do not have an electric mixer. Before whisking, I recommend to use a metal bowl and to put the bowl and whisk in the freezer for 15 minutes before you begin to make the cream. A cold bowl and utensils will help keep the heavy cream cold and allow it to aerate and form soft peaks quicker than if you did not chill it. Whisking by hand should take about 4-5 minutes.

Can I make Chantilly cream ahead of time?

Yes, you can make the Chantilly cream ahead of time! What a great time saver. Wrap it tightly and then pop it into your refrigerator until you're ready for it. Chantilly cream has the best taste and texture up to 2 hours after making it, but it will keep in your refrigerator for up to 24 hours.

👩🏻‍🍳 Variations

When trying a new flavor variation to the original recipe, it is advised to add the smallest amount, mix and taste it before adding more of the flavoring in.

  • Make Chocolate Chantilly cream by adding 1-2 Tablespoons. of cocoa powder or chocolate syrup.
  • Make strawberry Chantilly cream by adding strawberry syrup or a teaspoon of strawberry jam.
  • Use 1-2 drops of rose or orange water in place of vanilla extract. You could also try switching out the vanilla extract for another flavor such as almond, maple or orange.
  • Make chocolate hazelnut Chantilly cream by adding 1-2 teaspoons of Nutella.
