🥄 Instructions

Note: This is an overview of the instructions. The detailed instructions are in the recipe card below.

A collage of four images showing how to make healthy banana muffins.
These are great for busy mornings especially if you love muffins.
  1. Mash bananas in a large bowl. Add in all your wet ingredients. Stir to combine.
  2. Combine dry ingredients and stir to combine.
  3. Gently fold your dry ingredients into the wet ingredient bowl. Mix to combine but do not over mix.
  4. In a pre-lined muffin tin, fill muffin cups ¾ of the way full with muffin batter. Bake until golden at 375°F degrees.

💡 Tips

  • You can add in chocolate chips but you can also add in any kind of chopped nut for protein.
  • If you decide to use the chocolate chips you will fold them into the batter once the wet and dry ingredients have been combined.
  • Make sure your bananas are very ripe for this recipe to get the best flavor, plus they are easier to mash.
  • For this recipe, I used square dark chocolate pieces but you can use any kind of chocolate.
  • Make banana applesauce muffins in a mini-muffin tin to make smaller muffins for younger kids. Note that using a mini-muffin tin will mean they will cook quicker in the oven.

🧺 Storage

  • Store cooled muffins in an airtight container lined with paper towel. Place muffins in a single layer and cover the top with another paper towel to absorb excess moisture. No need to refrigerate, they will stay fresh for 4 days.
  • Individual muffins can be wrapped and frozen for up to 3 months. Let them thaw on the counter or thaw with a microwave thaw setting.

⌛ Make Ahead

Muffins can be made, wrapped and frozen for up to 3 months.

💬 FAQs

What is healthy alternative to all-purpose flour?

Banana applesauce muffins are made healthier using whole wheat flour. Whole wheat flour is rich in vitamins, protein, zinc and fiber.

Are banana muffins good for you?

Banana muffins are not considered a healthy food item as they usually contain saturated fats and sugar. A healthier banana muffin can be made by using items like whole wheat flour, oats, nuts and applesauce.

Why do we use applesauce?

Applesauce in baking recipes is a great alternative to oil or melted butter. It also adds flavor while keeping the texture moist.
