Ground beef gyros recipe has the Greek taste sensation you are looking for but so much easier and cheaper. Tender beef with authentic Mediterranean spices wrapped in soft pita bread and topped with tzatziki sauce or Greek salad.

One bite will bring a smile to your face. These drool worthy sandwiches are tasty, delicious and oh so amazingly good!

A classic Greek gyro is made with meat skewered and cooked on a rotisserie. But, you can make it right at home by easily food processing the ingredients, baking and slicing. The ground beef meat comes out juicy in the center and sometimes slightly crispy on the edges.

  1. In your food processor, process onion, garlic and the rest of the spices until finely chopped.
  2. Add ground beef and process.
  3. The mixture is soft like a paste.
  4. Shape into a loaf, place on a baking sheet and bake until done. Take it out of the oven, cover loosely with aluminum foil and wait for it to cook down for about 10 minutes. Cut into thin slices.

  1. To assemble gyros, add slices into a lightly oiled pan and brown the gyro slices for about 30 seconds on each side.
  2. Place meat on pita bread topped with tzatziki sauce, sliced onions, tomatoes and lettuce or Greek salad.

  • If you would like to use fresh herbs use 1 tablespoon fresh instead of 1 teaspoon dried.

Ground beef gyros can be made ahead of time by prepping the ground beef mixture and baking up the loaf. Easily double the recipe if you are making this for a party or gathering.

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs ground beef
  • 1 onion
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1½ teaspoon salt or to taste
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 3 Tablespoons plain yogurt
  • 1 Tablespoon olive oil

To Serve

  • Oil for pan frying
  • Pita bread
  • Tzatziki sauce
  • Lettuce, tomato and onion
  • Greek salad

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • In your food processor, process onion, garlic and the rest of the spices until finely chopped.
  • Add ground beef and process until the mixture is soft and like a paste.
  • Shape into a loaf, place on a baking sheet and bake for 40 minutes or until done.
  • Take it out of the oven, cover loosely with aluminum foil and wait for it to cook down for about 10 minutes.
