Gyros are a traditional Greek dish known for their rich flavors and satisfying nature. They consist of meat roasted on a vertically turning spit. The dish is typically served wrapped in warm pita bread or flatbread alongside fresh vegetables such as tomatoes and onions and often topped with homemade tzatziki sauce.

The history of gyros can be traced back to ancient Greece, where it was known as "gyro" meaning "turn". It was originally made using lamb meat, which was marinated and then slow-roasted on a spit. Over time, the dish evolved and gained popularity in other Mediterranean countries, such as Turkey and Lebanon.

Sauces For Gyros

If you ask me, the sauce is one of the best parts of a gyro. It adds an extra layer of flavor and creaminess to the already delicious dish.

The traditional sauce accompanying gyros is Greek Yogurt Dill Sauce (Tzatziki), a tangy and refreshing sauce made from yogurt, cucumber, garlic, salt, olive oil, and sometimes lemon juice and herbs. Tzatziki's creamy texture and cool taste contrast beautifully with the warm, spiced meat, providing a balance of flavors that is both delicious and satisfying

Apart from tzatziki, other sauces such as hummus, Toum(Lebanese garlic sauce), Muhammara sauce, or even spicy variants like harissa may also be used to cater to different taste preferences, adding a unique twist to the classic gyro.

Crunchy Side Dishes

There is something so satisfying about combining soft, warm meat and crunchy vegetables in a gyro. To add even more texture to this dish, many people also like to include a crispy side dish on their plate.

Some of our best side dishes are the classics, such as Air Fryer Frozen Sweet Potato Fries, tater tots, Air Fryer Frozen Onion Rings, or take your regular French fries up a notch and make Greek fries with feta cheese and red onion. You can never go wrong with one of these options, and the kids will love them all.

However, if you want to branch out and try something a little different, try pairing your Greek wrap with these Potato croquettes or even fried calamari for a seafood twist.

Salads

Do you love to see your plate filled with bright-colored vegetables and fresh salads? There is just something about a colorful plate that brings joy to our dining experience. If you are like me and this makes you happy then try these delicious with your gyros.

Traditional Greek Salad is one of my go-to side dishes for my gyro. It is light, refreshing, and filled with lots of crisp vegetables like tomatoes, cucumbers, onion, and peppers all tossed in a simple olive oil and lemon dressing.

However, there are also so many other great options such as Tabouli. It's a parsley-based salad with tomatoes, cucumbers, and bulgur wheat which adds an extra healthy element to your meal.

If you are looking for something a little more unique, try this Mediterranean Eggplant Salad, full of smoky eggplants, fresh herbs, and a tangy dressing.

Fattoush is another favorite, a Lebanese salad with crispy pita chips and a zesty dressing. The options are endless, so don't be afraid to mix and match and find your perfect combination of salads to go with your gyro.

Vegetable Sides

Vegetable sides are a wonderful way to complement the rich flavors of gyros, adding both nutrition and a variety of textures to your meal.

Roasted vegetables, for example, can bring out the sweetness in tomates, bell peppers, and zucchini, making them a perfect pair for savory meat.

Mediterranean green beans, also known as "fasolakia", are another popular side dish often served with gyros. These beans are slow-cooked with tomatoes, onions, and herbs until soft and flavorful, making them a great accompaniment to any gyro.

Or for a lighter option, you can pair these delicious protein-filled wraps with air-fried asparagus or air fryer frozen broccoli. Both of these options are quick and easy to make, making them a perfect choice for a busy weeknight dinner.

For some carbs, you might also try these Stuffed Grape Leaves. They make the perfect side dish. This Pesto Cousous is a wonderful five-minute side.

No matter what combination of sides you choose, they will undoubtedly take your gyro experience to the next level. So go ahead and mix and match, and don't be afraid to get creative with your side dishes!

Desserts

After a savory meal like gyros, there's always room for a sweet dessert to round off the dining experience.

One classic choice is baklava, a rich, sweet pastry made of layers of filo filled with chopped nuts and sweetened with syrup or honey. It's a traditional dessert in many Mediterranean countries and pairs wonderfully with the rich flavors of gyros.

Another delightful option is Greek yogurt with honey. This simple yet satisfying dessert combines the creamy texture of Greek yogurt with the sweetness of honey, creating a light but decadent finish to your meal.

For those who prefer something fruity, why not try a refreshing fruit salad? This dish can be a wonderful palate cleanser after a meal full of rich flavors. The mint adds a fresh touch that elevates the natural sweetness of the fruits.

If you are feeling creative treat your family to a special dessert. Try making this baklava cheesecake or revani cake. Both of these desserts incorporate elements from traditional Greek and Mediterranean cuisine. Making them a perfect way to end your gyro dinner.

These dessert options not only celebrate the flavors of the Mediterranean but also offer a perfect end to a feast. Whether you crave something rich and decadent or light and refreshing, there's a dessert that pairs perfectly with your meal.

Beverages

No gyro meal is complete without the perfect beverage to accompany it. And, with the right beverage, your gyro meal transforms from a simple dinner to a full culinary experience.

Drinks like Greek iced coffee or refreshing lemon water made with mint syrup can be invigorating, especially on hot days. Both beverages offer a burst of freshness that balances the richness of the gyro meal, ensuring a well-rounded dining experience.

If you prefer a creamy drink you could try this Ayran which is a traditional Turkish yogurt drink served cold. Made with yogurt, water, and salt it is a perfect match for your gyro.

Loomi Tea is a unique drink that provides a delicious way to end your gyro meal. It's made with dried Persian limes and saffron, creating a delightful combination of tart and sweet flavors. This tea is often served after meals in the Middle East as it is known to aid digestion.

No matter which of these delicious recipes you choose to serve with your gyros. There's no doubt that it will enhance the overall flavor experience of this hearty meal with your family.
