🥄 Instructions
Note: This is an overview of the instructions. The detailed instructions are in the recipe card below.
- Saute onion in olive oil then add ground beef break it apart with a wooden spoon and cook until no longer pink.
- Add spices and mix well.
- Add rice to the pan then pour in cooking liquid of choice. Mix well to combine.
- Bring to a boil uncovered, then reduce heat to low, cover and continue to cook until rice is done.
👍 Amira's Tips
- Once the rice has finished cooking, give it a taste so that you can add more salt or spices if needed.
- If you are adding more spices at the end, mix them in gently and then return the lid and allow the dish to rest for 2 or 3 minutes before serving.
- Prefer your ground beef in small crumbles? Use a chop and stir or meat chopper to break up the pieces while they cook.
- Make sure that you reduce the heat when you add the rice so that the rice doesn't burn.
- Fluff the rice with a fork instead of stirring with a spoon so that you get a nice an fluffy rice.
🧺 Storage
Place leftover in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3
days.
⌛ Make Ahead
I think this recipe is best served fresh, however you can make it ahead and chill it in the fridge until you are ready to serve if you like to meal prep. To reheat just add a splash of water and heat on low or you can reheat in the microwave.
🍽️ Serve With
- I like to serve Hashweh with a fresh vegetable side dish like these Mediterranean Roasted Vegetables or this Roasted Butternut Squash with Asparagus recipe.
- Serve with a side of salad like this fattoush salad or tabouli for a nice Lebanese touch.
👩🍳 Variations
- Instead of ground beef, you can use ground lamb, ground chicken, or even ground turkey if you prefer. If you are using chicken or turkey you will need to add more spices. Ground cardamom is highly recommended.
- Jasmine rice really works best in this recipe, but you can use long grain white rice or basmati rice instead.
- You can mix in a cup of frozen vegetables or your favorite steamed fresh vegetables if you want to make it a full meal.
💬 FAQs
Yes, you can freeze leftovers, however I recommend that you store them in a freezer safe container for up to one month.
Reheat single servings in the microwave for 1-2 minutes or until warm. You could also reheat in a skillet on the stove with a teaspoon of water.
