What to serve with shawarma

Do you have shawarma on your upcoming meal plan? If, so you may be wondering "what to serve with shawarma".  Have no fear, I've got a list of some really great recipes that all pair well with this popular street food.

From traditional Beef Shawarma to Chicken Shawarma there are so many different recipes that you use to make this popular dish. And, no matter which recipe you are using, there is something in this list that will please everyone in your family. So, read on to find some new ideas to add to your meal plan.

Salads and Dips

I love to serve a salad with my meals. And, these are some of my favorite salad recipes to make no matter what main course I am serving them with!

This Tomato Cucumber Salad is coated in a tangy tzatziki-style dressing that pairs perfectly with shawarma meats.

Pearl Couscous Salad is a refreshing and light dish that is perfect to pair with any of your favorite meals. 

Mediterranean Chickpea Salad is full of bright vibrant colors from fresh vegetables such as red onion, bell pepper, and so much. Your family will love this simple salad. 

Fattoush Salad is a delicious blend of fresh vegetables, crispy pita bread, and all coated in a tangy dressing that makes it perfect for pairing with your favorite meals. 

Baba Ganoush is a delicious and creamy dip made from roasted eggplant, tahini, and various spices. It's perfect for dipping homemade pita bread, pita chips, or vegetables.

Egyptian Salad is sold in many Kebab or Falafel restaurants. It's made with a delicious blend of fresh veggies, fresh herbs, and a light dressing that will have your family begging for more. 

Tabouli is a Middle Eastern salad that is made with bulgur, parsley, tomatoes, and mint. It's a perfect side dish that is packed with flavor and can be served with any grilled meats or as part of a mezze platter.

Quick Pickled Carrots are a tangy, crunchy, and perfect with your shawarma. Whip up a batch in minutes for a vibrant and flavorful condiment.

Starches and Vegetables

From fresh vegetables to rice there are many delicious sides to accompany your Middle Eastern meal. And, these are just a few of my favorites. 

Frozen Sweet Potato Fries in the air fryer are a delicious and easy side dish to add to any Middle Eastern meal. Simply season with some salt, pepper, and za'atar seasoning for a flavorful twist.

Batata Harra; experience the vibrant flavors of the Middle East with Batata Harra: crispy, spicy potatoes bursting with garlic, cilantro, and a touch of fiery chili.

Yellow Rice is another classic side dish that pairs perfectly with Middle Eastern cuisine. The turmeric and spices add a beautiful color and flavor to the rice, so it's great for any meal.

Air Fryer French Fries topped with some shawarma seasoning is a great way to add a little more flavor to your plate.

Mediterranean Rice Pilaf is a flavorful and fragrant side dish that is perfect for any Middle Eastern feast. It combines rice and spices for a delicious side dish with your meal.

Roasted Mediterranean Vegetables are a delicious and healthy side dish option. You can use a variety of vegetables such as potatoes, zucchini, bell peppers, and tomatoes to create a colorful and flavorful mix.

Cauliflower rice is a healthy vegetable side dish that you can season in so many different ways. Plus, it's a great way to sneak some vegetables into picky eaters. 

Mediterranean green beans are a simple and nutritious side dish that pairs well with any main course. They are lightly seasoned with garlic, lemon, and olive oil for a burst of flavor.

Air Fryer Asparagus or Air Fryer Frozen Broccoli are both simple fresh green side dishes that are quick to make and packed with nutrients.

This Stuffed Grape Leaves recipe is a great recipe to pair with any of your favorite meals.

Sauce

There are so many different sauces that you can use to add some extra flavor to your meal. These are a few of my family's favorites however the options are endless!

Greek yogurt dill sauce also called Tzatziki sauce is my go-to sauce to serve with a chicken shawarma plate. The cool and refreshing yogurt sauce will add a nice touch to your meal. 

Tahini sauce is another great option for a creamy and flavorful addition to your meal. It is made from sesame seeds paste, lemon juice, fresh garlic, and salt. This sauce pairs well with roasted vegetables or grilled meats. 

Lebanese garlic sauce is a delicious dip that you can use inside your shawarma wraps.

This Sour cream sauce is a simple yet delicious option that can be used as a dipping sauce on your shawarma plate. It is made with sour cream, lemon juice, and seasonings. So, you can't go wrong with this creamy sauce. 

Desserts

From traditional desserts to a simple fruit dish here are a few treats that will help you satisfy your sweet treat.

Baklava is a sweet and flaky pastry filled with nuts and honey. So it is a classic Mediterranean dessert that will impress your guests. 

Baklava Cheesecake is rich and creamy, with a hint of lemon juice for added flavor. The flaky crust makes this dish a standout among desserts. 

Fruit salad is a fresh and simple dessert that pairs well with Mediterranean cuisine. It's my go-to recipe when I want something light and refreshing to end a meal

Revani cake is a traditional Greek dessert made with semolina flour and citrus syrup. It's a light and sweet dessert that's perfect for ending a meal like this. 

Caramel Tres Leches is a moist Turkish-style cake that's soaked in three types of milk. And, then topped with a rich caramel sauce. It's a unique twist on a classic dessert that's sure to please any sweet tooth.

No matter which one of these recipes you choose to serve with your favorite chicken shawarma recipe, you will have a delicious meal. And, it will be full of Mediterranean taste without having to leave the comfort of your home.

Za'atar Potato Wedges

Delicious za'atar spiced potatoes perfect to accompany any Middle Eastern dinner. Great as a side to you shawarma, falafel, kabobs and more.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds potatoes
  • 3 Tablespoons oil
  • 2 Tablespoons Za'atar minx
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400F and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Set aside
  • Clean potatos and scrub well then cut each one into wedges about ½ inch thick.
  • In a large bowl combine oil, za'atar and garlic powder.
  • Pat wedges dry with a paper towel and dumb over the oil mixture.
  • Toss to coat all wedges well.
  • Transfer wedges to the prepared baking sheet and arrange in a single layer.
  • Bake in the center of your oven for 30 minutes tunrining them halfway through cooking using kitchen tongs or fork.
